The Elder Gods Weren't Male

The Elder Gods Weren't Male, 2D art
The Elder Gods Weren't Male
THE ELDER GODS WEREN'T MALE is an installation of related life experiences. The embedded images suggest how easily the stories picked up on my travels slip, between fact, fiction and metaphor and are just as relevant to the trifecta of issues facing us today - climate change, identity politics and religious freedoms - as when they were first related. The design is based on a very old nomadic kilim design from Central Asia describing an origin story of gods with blended genders – both male and female. Layered into the surface imagery is a map of my travels the Near and Middle East and Central Asia where the stories originated. Representing a Western perspective is the first paragraph from Dickens ‘A Tale Of Two Cities’ reproduced within the kilim’s central medallions. Students from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia translated the same text into emoji that forms the bottom border of the painting.
